In this special blog edition, I would like to introduce guest writer Mary Madill, MA. From
her advanced studies of Holistic Health, Mary brings a unique perspective and approach to help us broaden our mindfulness practices. Welcome Mary!

We all know that feeling, that moment when you're completely blown away by
something – the vastness of the night sky, a breathtaking sunset, witnessing true
kindness in action. It's awe, a powerful emotion that leaves us feeling both small and
profoundly connected to something larger than ourselves. Awe sparks a sense of
wonder, humility, and reverence, and it's not just a fleeting feeling. Research shows that
experiencing awe can actually boost our happiness, reduce stress, and even increase
our compassion. It provides us with much more than just momentary goosebumps!
So, how do we cultivate this awe-inspiring state of mind? Believe it or not, experiencing
awe doesn’t require a trip to the Grand Canyon. It starts with simple, mindful
observation. Slow down, truly see the world around you. Notice the intricate details of a
flower, the way sunlight filters through leaves, the unique expressions on people's faces.
Ask questions: How do so many different colors appear at sunrise? Why do birds sing?
How does my phone send images across the globe in an instant? Questions like these
can spark a sense of wonder and lead you down fascinating rabbit holes.
When we consider the bigger picture or story behind an experience, we are reminded of
the perfection of nature, the marvelous capabilities of the human body, the exceptional
creativity expressed through the arts, humanity’s ability to care for one another and so
much more. By expanding our perspective, we notice the extraordinary in the ordinary.
We awaken to the potential for awe.
Give it a try! Embrace the everyday wonders. The bloom of a flower, the warmth of the
sun on your skin, the gentle rhythm of your own breath – these simple moments can be
truly awe-inspiring when we allow ourselves to appreciate them. Feed your curiosity
and expand your opportunities for awe by exploring new things, engaging with art and
culture, and stepping outside your comfort zone.
Remember, awakening to awe is a journey, not a destination. It's about cultivating a
deeper connection to ourselves, to others, and to the world around us. Start small, allow
yourself to fully experience the emotions that arise when you encounter something awe-
inspiring, and share your experiences with others to inspire them on their own awe-
seeking journey. By incorporating these practices into our daily lives, we can rediscover
the wonder and magic that exists all around us.
